Chapter 18, Page 1
Pallad City Police Department Report
[Case Number #9283-A2]
Reporting Officer: Reena Saffron
Date: 11/16
On November 16th at 1329 hrs, I arrived at Kelcon Boulevard with Officer Wynter to investigate a disturbance involving a faulty construction mech. Upon arrival we spoke with the site foreman, who informed us that the mech (a new autonomous model) went haywire with the operator still trapped inside.
Due to Officer Wynter’s quick thinking, she was able to disable the mech and rescue the operator before anyone could be seriously injured.
Officer Wynter has requested a thorough examination and analysis of the mech’s A.I. by the Cyber Crimes Division, to check if the unit may have been hacked.

PCPD must pay pretty damn good for an 18/19 year old to get a nice flat like that. And i see Reena has gained a couple cup sixes again. That’s cool. Now, regarding the “Autonomous” machine. I hate anything that’s autonomous! Too much to screw up. Of course the damn thing was hacked. They’re all lucky to be alive.
As I said on a previous page, if you have an internet connection, you should keep it separate from anything dangerous and/or important.
I love automation though, in a sense everything any computer ever does is just highly automated calculations. For example bringing us this comic to read, and allowing us to comment and discuss – wonderful technology!
However, the word “autonomous” tends to be used by those who try to take it one step further than what is currently advisable. I don’t hate that, progress has to be made somehow, but I really wish many in that space were more cautious – especially with their words. I really really don’t like it when the capabilities of technology are overstated, that’s dangerous in the worst case, bad for trust at least.
Just look at what happened in “Fate of the Furious”, that cyber-bitch took control of dozens of ‘smart’ cars
I think at one point it was implied that Reena comes from a wealthy city/district? Might also explain why she can afford the apartment.
A police department HAS to pay a decent wage, if for no other reason than simple retention. Even a place as FUBAR as Pallad City, has to pay their Officers enough so they can, at the least, eke out a living. Plus, there is the fact that Pallad City is FUBAR, probably helps to keep rent low throughout most of the area.
Police need to be adequately paid because if their employer doesn’t, then their ‘clients’ might try to.
Treat Officers like dirt and make it impossible for them to care for their families and you could end up with a problem even they never saw coming.
Sometimes, you get what you pay for.
True, but do recall that the powers that be (i.e. the mayor) WANT the police department to fail. It’s the reason the police department is so underfunded.
