MAKING THE GRADE:
SUMTER ACADEMY
By Meghan Lindt

The Start of Sumter

Established over a century ago, Sumter Academy stands today as one of the most prestigious and selective private institutions in Pallad City. An all-girls boarding school serving grades 10-12, Sumter has not only earned a sterling reputation for excellence, but also for its exceptional roster of well-known alumnae. Industry leaders in the field of business, politics, science, sports, and the arts have hailed from Sumter’s hallowed halls. In recent decades, gaining admission to the academy has been viewed as a golden passport to success and, for many, an invaluable gateway to opportunities select few are ever offered.

However, Sumter’s impressive image extends not only in reputation, but matched by the building’s striking appearance. The school’s founder, Ira Sumter, envisioned a structure that would immediately convey a sense of grandeur and status. Originally built by Kregin Hahn, Sumter Academy is located on the outskirts of Pallad City, only minutes away from Silica. Hahn, an architect known for his unique gothic designs, incorporated many of his distinctive touches throughout the school, including the gargoyles that sit atop the building. Much of Sumter’s exterior has changed little, despite numerous renovations over the years. The interior itself has undergone significant modernization, but many of the hallways, classrooms, and dorms maintain an old-fashioned aesthetic.
