Reviewing the Magnetic Return System (W&D Mod Kit)
By Conran Yeri

Released last year by Welling & Dawson, the Magnetic Return System (MRS) for the ATMA 81-J may be one of the most unique handgun mods currently on the market. The custom kit comes with a handgun grip replacement and two polythalate neoleather gloves. Inside the grip is a powerful vodymium micro magnet, which W&D refers to as the “rapid returner” mechanism.

Once the new grip is installed, all it takes is a snap of a gloved finger, thereby “exciting” a magnet in the glove’s palm, and the firearm is instantly pulled to the wearer’s hand.

According to W&D, the Magnetic Return System is effective from a distance of up to 30 feet. We tested it and we actually managed to get it to work at just under 35 feet. To our surprise, the MRS was very effective and does exactly what W&D promises. The MRS is an amusing feature but, despite the brief bit of fun we had with it, the mod is really nothing more than a novelty—and an expensive one at that. It’s great for trying out in the backyard, but hard to imagine how something like this would be useful in a real-world scenario.

As the time of this review, the MRS is only compatible with the ATMA 81-J. However, W&D recently announced that kits for other handguns will be available soon.
